A new international relationship between the UK and Sri Lanka was recently built between Medics.Academy, a leading innovative health education provider based in the UK, and the esteemed University of Kelaniya. The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the University of Kelaniya on January 17, 2024.
Medics.Academy, known for its innovative learning methods tailored for healthcare professionals and students, brings together a diverse multidisciplinary team. They share a vision to empower health professionals globally by making high-quality healthcare training equitably accessible, by using a combination of technology and a rich network of healthcare experts.

In honour of this collaboration, Medics.Academy has pledged to establish and sustain a resource affiliated with the Department of Medical Education at the University of Kelaniya, specifically focused on advancing tech-based medical education research.
The collaboration goes beyond financial support, as both institutions commit to elevating their tech-based research outlook. They aim to foster placements and exchanges for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professions students, enhancing academic programmes and enriching the educational experience.
In a notable initiative, Medics.Academy will sponsor a PhD student associated with the Department of Medical Education at the University of Kelaniya. This sponsored student will undertake research in the Med-Tech space, contributing to research papers that focus on effectively utilising the Medics.Academy platform within the Faculty of Medicine at the University.
The MOU signing ceremony was a momentous occasion, led by Dr. Johann Malawana, CEO of Medics.Academy, and Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.
Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University of Kelaniya, also played a crucial role in formalising the agreement. The event saw the presence of key figures such as Professor Derek Gallen, Chief Education Officer at Medics Academy, Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr Pavithra Godamunne, Head of the Department of Medical Education.
Several other representatives from Medics.Academy was present, including Mr Dinesh Fernandopulle (Chief Technology Officer), Mr Sajade Kitchilan (Head of Marketing), Ms Dewmini Perera (Business Development), and Mr Chamath Perera (Marketing Manager). This collaboration promises to contribute to the growing relationship between the medical education sectors of Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, and we are confident that it marks the beginning of a very prosperous partnership between the two institutions.
